To be well-prepared for a journey with plant medicines is to gift yourself deeper safety and a more stable, clear and open foundation with which these medicines can work their magic.
Preparing for a plant medicine journey involves getting ourselves as 'ready' as possible for our journey, in order to enhance our own stability and clarity heading into the ceremony, so that we can experience the best possible outcome.
This can involve:
Physical cleansing (pre-ceremony food diet, reduction or elimination of counter-indicative substances/medications)
Energetic cleansing (pre-ceremony "diet" of clean energies, e.g. no heavy media intake, social media cleanse, staying clear/protected from heavy social situations, etc.)
Mental preparation (practices to clear the mind, such as journalling and meditation)
Grounding practices (e.g. spending time in nature)
Setting intentions (clearly defining why we are sitting in ceremony and what exactly we are hoping for)
In your prep session, the role of an integration coach is to assist you in feeling as ready and clear as possible heading into your ceremony. If you haven't done so already, the session can involve making sure you are fit and ready to go - physically, emotionally and psychologically - depending on which medicine you are preparing to sit with. Any pre-ceremony questions you may have can be asked and answered, and any concerns can be explored in order to help you feel empowered with the information you need. A prep session also involves an exploration into where you're at - physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually - clarifying what you'd like to change in your current life. From here it can be easier to set very clear intentions, which then serve as both an anchor point in your journey, as well as a point of reflection for your integration.
Preparation sessions are your "pre-flight talk". They can help you feel more grounded, clear and stable, giving you a better foundation for deep work to be done in ceremony, as well as in the aftermath.
We need integration after any plant medicine or psychedelic journey in order to experience true, lasting, positive change.
Put simply, in the context of plant medicine/psychedelic work, "integration" means bringing the wisdom you gained in ceremony into your body and your daily life. "Embodiment" could easily replace the word "integration".
Integration basically involves anything that assists you in this, and is completely unique to each person and what works for them.
Integration practices can involve:
Meditation
Somatic work (yoga, breath work, exercise, somatic therapy...)
Emotional processing
Reflective processes (journalling, self-inquiry, talk therapy...)
Creative expression (painting, singing, dancing, writing, gardening...)
Practices to connect to nature and spirit (prayer, spending time in nature, gratitude practices...)
An integration session is designed to support you with this process in the aftermath of your journey. An integration coach holds the space for you to sit with your experience and with whatever has come up as a result. Our role is to help you understand what the experience is teaching you, to help you embody these new found wisdoms and to make any adjustments in your life that support this movement towards healing and self-fulfillment.
In these sessions, the aim is always for you to arrive at your own realisations - you are the writer (and editor) of your own story, and the decider of your own decisions.
Have you ever heard someone say something along the lines of: "The real work begins outside of ceremony"?
They are pointing to the power of true integration. And you don't need to do it alone!
